• Trailer - Working With Maritime Security Guards

As part of their anti piracy measures, many shipping companies now employ armed security guards aboard vessels that transit pirate waters. However, there are legal and safety risks associated with the use of armed guards, and it is vital to choose a Private Maritime Security Company (PMSC) that offers highly competent and professionally trained guards who have experience in protecting ships against pirate attacks. WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS is intended to give shipping companies and personnel on board ship useful guidance on how to engage and work successfully with armed guards, from selecting the PMSC through to the guards' disembarkation at the end of their deployment. It is a companion programme to Videotel's PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY, EDITION 3, which deals with piracy preven...

Inside Oil Tankers - Documentary Films All over the world, tanker operations are constantly moving. Oil tankers are ships specially designed for the bulk transport of either unrefined crude oil or petrochemicals. Their size classes can range from coastal or inland tankers of a few thousand metric tons of deadweight (DWT) to a colossal amount of 550,000 DWT. These giant specialized ships transport approximately two billion metric tons of oil across the sea every year. Crude oil is one of the world's most consumed sources of energy. Oil tankers, therefore, play a significant role in the way the country operates. Find out more about the publication of the Maritime Growth Study at the launch of London International Shipping 2015 here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-maritime-report-launched-as-london-international-shipping-week-gets-underway Video Transcript: Robert Goodwill MP A thriving maritime sector is fundamental to this government’s vision for a prosperous Britain. A vision with our maritime industries at the heart of our economy, driving growth and innovation. Michael Parker The maritime industry contributes around £11 billion a year to the UK economy, and we employ, as an industry, around a quarter of a million people in this country. Guy Platten The UK maritime sector is composed of so many different parts of the cluster. We have it all here. We’ve got the ship managers, we’ve got the ship owners, we’ve got law firms, accountancy firms, finance houses, consultancies, training providers, we’ve got a highly skilled workforce, we’ve got an adaptable economic policy, we’ve got stable democracy and a good rule of law. So it’s so many good reasons to come to the UK to set up a maritime business. Robert Mortimer The biggest challenge I think is to stay looking long term, to look ahead. To look ahead, to look at the increasing, the growth in global trade, and therefore the opportunities available for the UK to capture more of that trade, whether it’s in the port sector or shipping or services. And to invest to be prepared for that trade. Lord Mountevans What we have done recently under government leadership, a Maritime Growth Study was commissioned which I have been privileged to chair. This is the first time for some 20 years that a major review has been made of both how government is organised in this sector and also how business promotes itself. Doug Barrow And that’s an opportunity to see where we can be more competitive as a country and to contribute more to the economy, and that’s very important that we get that right. Robert Goodwill MP Sea trade will double by 2030 and the UK’s maritime and marine sectors are ready to seize the opportunities this creates.

Because of the products they are built to carry, without proper maintenance, these mammoth ships of black gold can also pose a threat on the environment. To ensure that an oil tanker does not severely impact the environment, oil companies must employ an expert and highly experienced ship management service to oversee tanker operations. They must also routinely check their oil tankers for maintenance purposes. Fixing the smallest dent, scratch or crack can mean the difference between safe sailing across miles of seawater and a devastating oil spill. On board the ship, safety measures should be strictly imposed. Because of the hazardous - and often flammable - nature of the materials being transported, the possession of flammable objects should be avoided if not prohibited entirely to avoid accidents, which can threaten the lives of the people on the ship, as well as the surrounding marine life. Whether at sea or anchored at a dock, tanker operations and safety measures should still be strictly implemented to prevent the ship from negatively affecting the environment.

Volpe used its data and system engineering expertise in 2006 to develop a maritime domain awareness (MDA) network known as the Maritime Safety and Security Information System (MSSIS) for the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet. MSSIS is a low-cost, unclassified, near real-time network that is used to track vessels as they traverse the world's waterways. Countries that employ MSSIS in their shipping operations are able to share data from Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). The primary goal of MSSIS is to increase maritime safety and security through a comprehensive situational awareness display of vessels equipped with AIS. Today, more than 70 countries have joined the MSSIS network, which has significantly improved maritime safety and economic stability for participating countries. The system currently tracks more than 62,000 vessels and continues to be an invaluable tool for security forces globally, providing support for international military operations and joint exercises as well as search-and-rescue missions. WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU is often the last question you will be asked in an interview. Prepare for it. This is your chance to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and to summarize your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job, and that's why they should hire you. Review the job description and tell how you are the right person for the job by matching up your skill set with each bullet point of the job description. In formulating your answer as to why they should hire you, be sure to address these areas: 1. Determine their goals for the position. This should come up during your research into the company and the position. If possible, talk to others who work for the company. If you are unclear on this point, include it in the questions you ask at the interview and be prepared to incorporate it into your answer. 2. Show you have the skills needed for the job. People with disabilities represent an untapped pool of skills that can enhance business. However, people with disabilities frequently face greatbarriers to work that go beyond physical obstacles -- stereotypes and wrong assumptions often prevent this significant chunk of the world population from contributing to the economy. LASD Update: Single segment on the Special Enforcement Bureau The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has a special weapons team called the S.E.B., or Special Enforcement Bureau. The Bureau was formed in 1958 as the Special Enforcement Detail, and has transcended into one of the country's premier tactical units. Recently, SEB commemorated its 56th Anniversary. Present day, SEB is comprised of three details: Special Enforcement Detail (SED) or Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), responsible for handling barricades, hostage situations and other high-risk operations, as well as providing security for dignitaries and political officials; Canine Services Detail (CSD) responsible for assisting patrol stations by searching for armed and dangerous suspects with the use of highly specialized dogs; Emergency Services Detail (ESD) conducts search and rescue, dive and maritime operations. All details work as one unit during tactical operations providing the community with the specialties each detail brings to the operation. Our goal is to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors by being at the forefront of innovative ideas and to employ cutting edge technology to ensure the safest outcome to critical incidents. The use of tactical paramedics and insertion of specialized canines trained in tactical movement and explosive detection are innovations developed at SEB. SEB also works with its port partners, United States Coast Guard, Los Angeles Port Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, and other partners utilizing a multi-jurisdictional approach to conduct daily operations. SEB recently deployed the nation's newest sophisticated patrol boat to defend against terrorism and criminal activity. As part of our maritime operations, SEB patrols over 800 square miles of unincorporated Los Angeles County open-ocean and two islands, assisting the Coast Guard with local law enforcement matters. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department participated in the Offshore Platform Security Threat Awareness and Response Program (OPSTAR 13) maritime exercise along with many federal, state and local agencies. The OPSTAR 13 exercise explored the homeland security, homeland defense, emergency response, and emergency management issues presented by security threats to offshore oil and gas platforms in the Southern California region. * Exercise goals: Reinforce federal, state, local, and private sector partnerships. Strengthen existing emergency response and management plans, systems, and capabilities applicable to offshore platform response operations. Evaluate interoperable systems to enhance maritime domain awareness, threat identification and early warning, and interoperable communication. Identify future planning, acquisition, training, and exercise needs related to the integrated response to an offshore platform incident. Provide the justification and framework for a sustained government-and industry-focused offshore platform safety and security program. To be a truly great company, it is not enough to plan for today—you must also plan for tomorrow. At Seaspan, we believe that our future strength at sea rests in the hands of our current cadets, and in the emphasis and care we place on their training. How do we ensure this? First, we select the best and brightest cadets from quality maritime universities worldwide. Next, we employ a dedicated cadet training superintendent to oversee our program and to guide our cadets. Then, we designate four ships in our fleet as cadet training vessels, each with its own dedicated cadet training officer and classroom onboard. And, finally, we conduct sixteen week sessions of hands-on, practical training onboard these ships to test the skills cadets learn at school. Though this video highlights a group of deck cadets, we also provide a program for engine cadets. Both programs pride themselves on being well-rounded and on providing skills relevant to a variety of ship sizes and engine types. The curriculum focuses on safety and good practice, and is planned carefully to ensure that cadets acquire comprehensive knowledge and experience. After all, our ultimate goal is to develop these young seafarers into Seaspan's future senior officers.

Some businesses simply need to be near the water. Take a company like Vigor in Seattle, for example. They build ships. They build our WA state ferries. They are somewhat new to the Seattle community, but they employ highly skilled people and boost our economy. They've even opened a school, right here on the Seattle waterfront, to teach people the skills they need to get a high-paying job the day they graduate. These are smart people at Vigor. They hire the best graduates and put them to work immediately. Talk about making an investment in our community! A working waterfront is critical to our economy in the Pacific Northwest. A working waterfront provides valuable jobs that depend on easy access to the water. A working waterfront is why Seattle is here in the first place! It was established and grew here because Seattle has a world class, natural harbor, advantageously located to critical places around the globe. The sea and ships are a huge part of our history and our legacy. The companies that deal with ships, boats and the sea have to be stewards of this valuable resource and we need to insure that they are. But, they need access to the water! It's more than economics, it's our history and our culture. Let's protect the working waterfront and keep Seattle a real seaport town, not a "Disneyland" facade of one. Chip Hanauer, The Boat Guy
